It’s with great joy that we announce the birth of our new grandson, Gideon Patton Burke, born yesterday on February 8th, around 8:00 PM. I don’t have many details other than to say it wasn’t a “normal birth” like the past eight babies for Kim. This was a surprise breach birth!

Sometime before 2 PM Sunday, Kim started contractions so she and her husband, Al, along with the three oldest children took off for the hospital and arrived sometime around 3:00 PM Sunday afternoon leaving grandma with the little ones. The intern checked her and she was dilated to 5 cm and said everything looked great. The doctor arrived just in the nick of time at 7:45 PM but after checking Kim announced, “we have a breach birth”. Kim was in lot’s of difficulty, unlike her previous eight births and declared, “I can’t make it, I’ll die”! The doctor told Kim, “we can deliver this baby but you will have to obey my commands to breath and push only when I tell you to.” At this point, it is my understanding that the scene changed immediately from having a doctor and nurse to a room full of help…. four doctors and enough nurses and aids to make up Thirty people.

I cannot even imagine what it was like in that room after this. It has only been described to me as intense! I don’t even know if that is even a strong enough word. As I was getting the information, I was getting a little light headed and started looking for a place to sit down. The great news, after several complications (to put it mildly), mother and baby are doing GREAT!

Kim told me today that after many complications and warnings, Gideon Patton seems to have made it through. She and Al, jokingly laughing now that this baby didn’t have to have such a grand entrance to be remembered in this family of 9 children, with much thankfulness, laid hands on Gideon and declared him to be a ‘Mighty Man of Valor” for the Lord’s sake.

Pastor Sandy, upon hearing not these details, but details from past births, told me that you must be very proud of Kim. This also puts new light upon the sermon that Pastor Sandy delivered to New Covenant yesterday entitled “The Suffering and Joy in Birth”. He took us through the scriptures showing us that when God decides to birth something in us or birth a church, it always includes suffering and sacrifice before there is the joy of fruitfulness.

I wonder how many of us have had something God has wanted to birth in us and we have declared, “I can’t make it, I’ll die”?
